• Gum Disease

Gum disease is the most common cause of  tooth loss. Gums gradually shrink as people age. After age 35, about  three out of four adults are affected by some form of gum disease. It is  a slowly progressing infection and is mostly painless in the early  stages, and hence most people do not pay any attention to it till it is  too late. But it is a totally preventable disease, and can be treated if  caught early.

Come see us for regular exams and cleanings.  We will address any questions or concerns you may have.

Periodontal Disease - Can Be Without Warning

Periodontal disease is an infection of the  tissues that support your teeth. It is caused by plaque, a sticky film  of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. If this plaque is not  removed on a daily basis, it will become mineralized to form a stony  crust called calculus or tartar. It is not possible for you to remove  this calculus - your dentist will use a special instrument called a  scaler to remove it. This bacteria create toxins that can damage the  gums and bone.

It is possible to have periodontal disease  and have no warning signs. That is one reason why regular dental  checkups and periodontal examinations are very important. Treatment  methods depend upon the type of disease and how far the condition has  progressed. Good oral hygiene at home is essential to help keep  periodontal disease from becoming more serious or recurring. You don't  have to lose teeth to periodontal disease. Brush, clean between your  teeth, eat a balanced diet, and schedule regular dental visits for a  lifetime of health smiles.

Warning signs include: bleeding gums,  redness of gum tissue, swelling and/or tenderness of gums around the  teeth, breath odor or bad taste, receding gums, mobility of teeth, any  change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite, any change in  the fit of partial dentures.
